Comeback Viability and Snowball Testing
A snowball is a lead that gets easier to defend the bigger it gets — the leader's advantage compounds faster than a trailing player can close it. Some snowball is normal and even satisfying. The problem is a point of no return: a gap that, once opened, no realistic sequence of decisions can close.
How we frame it
We test for the specific turn or score gap past which trailing players stop being able to win, not just whether the leader usually wins. A game can have a real leader advantage and still be healthy if a determined trailing player has a genuine, findable path back. The review looks at whether that path exists and how often bounded-rationality play actually finds it.
- Past what score or resource gap does the trailing player's win rate drop to effectively zero?
- Does the game's own catch-up mechanic, if any, actually close that gap, or just soften the feeling of it?
- Do different player counts change how fast the snowball compounds?
- Is the comeback path realistic for a human under time pressure, or only for a perfectly optimal line?
