Dominant Strategy Detection in Board Games

Dominant Strategy Detection in Board Games

A dominant strategy is a choice that outperforms its alternatives so consistently that skilled players stop considering the alternatives at all. It does not have to win every game to be a problem — it just has to be correct often enough that the other options stop feeling like real choices.

How we frame it

Board Game Balance Lab tests for dominance the way a repeated decision actually gets made: across many games, many seats, and many opponent strategies, not one clever playtest session. A strategy that wins 80% of games against a mixed field is a different problem than one that wins 55% — the review distinguishes "strong" from "solved."

  • Does one strategy win at a materially higher rate than its alternatives across player counts?
  • Does the advantage hold up against opponents who are actively trying to counter it?
  • Do other viable-looking strategies exist on paper but lose consistently in practice?
  • Is the dominant line easy to execute, or does it require precision most players will not reach?
