Victory Path Balance in Board Games
Games with more than one way to win only work if the paths are genuinely competitive with each other. If one path is faster, safer, or easier to execute, it stops being an alternate strategy and becomes the strategy — and the other paths become theming rather than real options.
How we frame it
The review compares win rate, average completion turn, and execution difficulty across every victory condition your game offers, not just whether each path is technically reachable. A path that wins 10% of games because almost nobody can pull it off is a balance problem even if it is mechanically fair on paper.
- Does one victory path win at a disproportionate rate across player counts and archetypes?
- Does one path consistently trigger earlier, cutting off the time other paths need to develop?
- Are all paths reachable by a near-human player under normal play, or only by a highly optimal line?
- Does introducing or removing one card or rule shift the balance between paths more than expected?
